Le Terme Abbandonate di Sclafani Bagni rappresentano una di quelle esperienze che sanno trasformare un semplice itinerario di viaggio in una vera avventura tra passato e mistero. In questo percorso mi sono davvero sentito un Ubex, un esploratore di luoghi dimenticati dal tempo, pronto a lasciarsi alle spalle la sicurezza delle strade battute per seguire la curiosità verso ciò che resta nascosto. Sclafani Bagni, piccolo centro in provincia di Palermo, custodisce tra le sue colline questo antico istituto termale ormai abbandonato, raggiungibile facilmente in auto grazie a una strada asfaltata che si insinua nel verde, anche se, paradossalmente, è altrettanto facile perdersi.
Google Maps, infatti, a volte suggerisce percorsi assurdi o conduce verso strade a senso unico, quindi bisogna armarsi di pazienza e, magari, chiedere qualche indicazione alla gente del posto.
Non è raro, arrivando qui, imbattersi in qualche camper di viaggiatori stranieri che si fermano qualche giorno, attratti dal fascino decadente e silenzioso di questo luogo fuori dal tempo. Il vecchio istituto termale appare all’improvviso, dopo una piccola salita che si può fare sia in auto che a piedi: davanti si apre un parcheggio improvvisato e poco più in là l’edificio abbandonato, con le sue finestre vuote e i muri segnati dal tempo, sembra quasi invitare a entrare per ascoltare le storie che ancora conserva tra le sue mura.
A fianco dell’istituto si trova la pozza di acqua “calda”, che in realtà è solo tiepida, ma che regala comunque una sensazione di pace e sospensione dal mondo: il panorama tutt’intorno è quello tipico delle campagne siciliane, aspro e dolce insieme.
La storia di queste terme è fatta di tentativi e di sogni naufragati: l’istituto passò per diverse gestioni, ma alla fine fu sempre lasciato andare, complici le frane e i fenomeni naturali che spesso rendono la zona isolata, soprattutto nei mesi invernali, quando il rischio di restare tagliati fuori è reale. Dopo tanti tentativi, il luogo fu abbandonato definitivamente e ancora oggi sembra che il tempo qui si sia fermato: esplorare questi spazi è come fare un viaggio indietro di almeno vent’anni, camminando tra le ombre e i silenzi di un passato che si ostina a rimanere presente. On this trip, I truly felt like an urban explorer, ready to leave behind the comfort of well-trodden roads and follow my curiosity to places forgotten by time. Sclafani Bagni, a small town in the province of Palermo, hides this old thermal institute among its hills—a place now abandoned, yet easily reached by car along a winding paved road that snakes through the countryside. Ironically, though, it’s just as easy to get lost: Google Maps sometimes leads you down strange paths or even into one-way streets, so patience is required, and sometimes it’s better to just ask a local for directions.
Arriving here, it’s not uncommon to find campers belonging to foreign travelers, drawn by the haunting beauty and silence of this place frozen in time. The old thermal institute suddenly appears after a short climb—accessible either by car or on foot—and a small, makeshift parking area opens up before you. Just beyond is the abandoned building, with its empty windows and walls scarred by the years, almost inviting you to enter and listen to the stories still lingering within. Next to the institute lies the “hot” pool (which is, in truth, only lukewarm), but even so, the experience brings a unique sense of peace and detachment from the world, surrounded by the distinctive Sicilian countryside—harsh and gentle at the same time.
The history of these baths is one of hope and disappointment: the institute changed hands many times, but was always ultimately abandoned, mainly because of landslides and natural events that often isolate the area, especially in winter, when it’s easy to find yourself completely cut off. After so many attempts, the place was finally left to its fate, and today, it really feels as if time has stopped here—exploring these spaces is like stepping back at least twenty years, moving through shadows and silence that stubbornly hold on to the past.
