Vi siete mai chiesti come ci si ritrova, quasi per caso, a camminare per le strade di Bucarest? Per me tutto è iniziato accompagnando un amico che doveva cominciare una nuova avventura lavorativa come pizzaiolo proprio nella capitale della Romania, una città che spesso divide chi la visita tra entusiasmo e diffidenza, tra chi la ama e chi la trova ostile. Ed è proprio questa atmosfera di mistero e contrasti a rendere Bucarest così affascinante: appena arrivato sono stato travolto da un senso di confusione, di rumore e movimento continuo, un fiume di auto e persone che sembrano non fermarsi mai e la difficoltà quasi surreale di trovare un taxi libero tra la folla, come se anche solo il fatto di riuscire a salire su un’auto fosse una piccola impresa.

La città, suddivisa in sei settori, è un mosaico di realtà molto diverse tra loro, e la sensazione di sicurezza o pericolo può cambiare radicalmente da un quartiere all’altro: ci sono settori davvero malfamati, dove la criminalità si percepisce nell’aria, e dove anche i tassisti più esperti preferiscono non addentrarsi, rifiutandosi persino di accompagnare i clienti in certe zone. Non è raro sentire storie di episodi spiacevoli, e la prudenza qui è davvero fondamentale, soprattutto quando si esplorano quartieri sconosciuti o si decide di avventurarsi fuori dalle strade più battute. Eppure, basta spostarsi verso il centro della città e l’atmosfera cambia improvvisamente: sembra quasi di essere in un’altra città, piena di vita, di persone che passeggiano tra locali e bar all’aperto, con un’energia vibrante che invita a scoprire ogni angolo.

Di giorno il centro offre scorci davvero interessanti, a partire dal monumentale "Palatul Parlamentului", il mastodontico palazzo del Parlamento che è una delle icone di Bucarest, simbolo di un passato ingombrante ma allo stesso tempo affascinante. Camminare per le vie del centro è un’esperienza che ti permette di scoprire una città che vuole lasciarsi alle spalle le ombre del passato e offrire al visitatore angoli inaspettati di bellezza e autenticità. E se volete un momento di puro relax, le famose terme di Bucarest – celebri in tutta Europa – sono una tappa imperdibile per chi desidera prendersi una pausa e immergersi nel benessere.

Quando cala la sera, però, la città cambia volto: le luci si abbassano, le ombre si allungano e Bucarest mostra il suo lato più ambiguo e misterioso. Ho trascorso la notte esplorando diversi locali e bar, ma devo essere sincero, non mi sono mai sentito completamente a mio agio, sempre con la sensazione addosso di dover stare all’erta. In alcuni bar mi sono trovato davanti a scene che sembravano uscite da un film: uomini appariscenti circondati da ragazze giovanissime, gioielli e oro che brillavano sotto le luci soffuse, un’atmosfera quasi surreale, eppure reale, e tutto questo in locali che non erano night club ma semplici bar con un po’ di musica in sottofondo. Purtroppo la mia esperienza a Bucarest si è concentrata in una sola notte e non ho avuto la possibilità di esplorare a fondo la sua night life, ma sono sicuro che, tra le sue mille sfaccettature, la città sappia offrire anche serate indimenticabili e sicure, forse serve solo un po’ più di tempo per scoprirle davvero. E chissà, magari un giorno tornerò a verificare se Bucarest, sotto la sua superficie ruvida, nasconde anche un’anima più dolce e accogliente.

Have you ever wondered how you can end up, almost by chance, wandering the streets of Bucharest? For me, it all started by accompanying a friend who was beginning a new job as a pizza chef in the Romanian capital—a city that seems to split visitors right down the middle, between those who love its wild energy and those who find it overwhelming or even intimidating. And honestly, it’s this sense of contradiction and mystery that makes Bucharest so fascinating: as soon as I arrived, I was immediately struck by the chaos all around me—the relentless stream of cars and people, the nonstop movement, and the almost surreal challenge of finding a free taxi in the crowd. It felt like even getting into a car was a small victory.

The city is divided into six sectors, each with its own unique atmosphere, and whether you feel safe or uneasy really depends on which area you’re in. Some sectors have a reputation for being rough and even dangerous, with crime that you can practically sense in the air; even the most seasoned taxi drivers sometimes refuse to take passengers to certain parts of town. It’s not unusual to hear stories about uncomfortable or even dangerous encounters, and you really have to stay sharp, especially if you’re exploring unfamiliar neighborhoods or venturing off the main roads. Yet, as soon as you move toward the city center, everything changes in a heartbeat: suddenly it feels like you’re in a completely different place, alive with people, open-air bars and cafés, and an infectious energy that draws you in and makes you want to discover more.

During the day, Bucharest’s center reveals its own surprising beauty, starting with the monumental “Palatul Parlamentului”—the immense Palace of the Parliament, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and a symbol of both its heavy past and its undeniable charm. Walking the central streets gives you a glimpse into a city that’s determined to move on from its shadows and show visitors moments of unexpected beauty and authenticity. And if you need a moment to unwind, Bucharest’s famous thermal baths—renowned all over Europe—are an absolute must for anyone looking to relax and recharge.

But when night falls, the city changes its face: the lights dim, shadows grow longer, and Bucharest reveals its more ambiguous, mysterious side. I spent my only night there exploring a range of bars and clubs, and I’ll be honest—I never fully felt at ease, always aware of my surroundings and careful not to let my guard down. In some bars, I witnessed scenes straight out of a movie: flashy men surrounded by very young women, gold and jewelry sparkling under dim lights, a surreal atmosphere that was somehow all too real—and all this in ordinary bars, not in nightclubs. Unfortunately, my experience was limited to a single night, so I didn’t get the chance to dive deeper into Bucharest’s nightlife, but I’m sure that, among its many layers, the city also offers safe and unforgettable evenings—you probably just need more time to truly discover them. Who knows, maybe someday I’ll return to find out if, beneath its rough surface, Bucharest hides a softer, more welcoming soul.
